Former State Minister Prasanna Ranaweera, who had been in remand custody for over four and a half months, was today (30) granted bail by the Gampaha High Court.
He was accused of preparing forged deeds and selling a state-owned land in Kiribathgoda. Ranaweera, who had been evading arrest in connection with the case, surrendered to court on 7 May and was subsequently remanded.
When his bail application was taken up today, attorneys appearing on his behalf made submissions before the High Court. After considering the arguments, High Court Judge ordered that Ranaweera and co-suspect Sarath Edirisinghe be released on strict bail conditions.
Each suspect was ordered to furnish a cash bail of Rs. 500,000 and five surety bails of Rs. 500,000 each. In addition, they were required to surrender their passports to court and appear before the Financial Crimes Investigation Division (FCID) every Sunday.
