Steps are underway to ban the sale of unpackaged coconut oil in the local market amid concerns over adulteration, the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) said.
CAA Acting Director General Samantha Karunasena said a Gazette notification containing the proposed regulations has already been drafted and is expected to be issued in due course.
She made the remarks while appearing before a subcommittee of the Parliamentary Committee on Public Enterprises (COPE).
Under the proposed regulations, coconut oil sold in the market will be required to be packaged and carry key labelling information, including the product name, weight, expiry date, batch number and details of the manufacturer.
Karunasena said the measure is being introduced in response to concerns over the adulteration of coconut oil sold to consumers.
She added that the CAA is also working with the Sri Lanka Standards Institution (SLSI) to ensure that coconut oil available in the local market meets the required quality standards.
