The Cabinet has approved the procurement of an additional 50 low-floor buses to expand modern public transport services, following the successful acquisition of 100 buses under the Public Transport System Modernisation Programme.

The Government said the supplier has already imported the initial batch of 100 low-floor buses, which are intended to improve passenger transport and introduce more efficient urban mobility.

The expansion aims to extend the Metro Bus Project beyond the Colombo Metropolitan Region, with the first phase planned for Kandy, Galle and Jaffna. The cities were selected based on passenger demand, their strategic importance and their roles as major regional transport and tourism hubs.

The proposal, submitted by the Ministry of Transport, Highways and Urban Development, seeks to procure the additional buses as a 50% re-order under Government procurement guidelines, based on the contract awarded on 6 March 2026 for the initial purchase of 100 buses.

Cabinet approval paves the way for the expansion of comfortable and accessible public transport services in key urban centres across the country.
