Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) member, NDF MP Chamara Sampath Dassanayake claimed that every future President would need his support to govern, insisting that no one could form the next Government without SLFP MPs.
Dassanayake said the SLFP remained the party that had produced the highest number of Presidents in Sri Lanka and would continue to play a decisive role in forming future governments.
He said the party now had an opportunity to rebuild after its recent electoral setbacks and expressed confidence that it could secure at least 20 seats in Parliament at the next General Election.
“No one can form the next Government without SLFP MPs. Write that down,” he said.
Dassanayake also highlighted the SLFP’s political legacy, noting that former Presidents Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga, Mahinda Rajapaksa, Maithripala Sirisena, and former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa had all been associated with the party.
He further announced that a major event would be held in Colombo on September 2 to mark the SLFP’s 75th anniversary.
“Whoever becomes President in the future, Chamara Sampath will be needed to govern the country,” he claimed.
