Mohamed Hizbullah Muzammil, the eldest son of former Colombo Mayor A.J.M. Muzammil, has reportedly been arrested at Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) over the alleged non-payment of nearly Rs. 36 million linked to a building construction project.

A team of officers from the Central Crime Investigation Bureau carried out the arrest following a complaint lodged by a business entity.

According to the complaint, the suspect had allegedly failed to pay nearly Rs. 36 million owed for a construction project.

While investigations were underway, the suspect reportedly attempted to leave the country through BIA. Airport authorities and investigating officers subsequently took him into custody.

A.J.M. Muzammil is a prominent politician who served as Mayor of Colombo while representing the United National Party. He later served as Governor of the Western, North Western and Uva provinces, as well as in several diplomatic posts.

During the 2016–2018 period, legal proceedings and overseas travel restrictions were also reportedly imposed on Mohamed Hizbullah Muzammil in connection with separate allegations involving financial fraud, dishonoured cheques and misappropriation of funds.
