The UNP won the Mahanuwara District with 440,761 votes (55.57%). winning 7 of the 12 seats in the district.

The UPFA received 309,152 votes (38.98%) and won 5 seats from the district. The JVP received 30,669 seats but did not win any seats.

In 2010, the UPFA won the district with 339,819 votes and won 8 seats. The UNP received 192,798 votes, winning 4 seats.
