MPs Protest In Front Of Hambanthota Police Demanding Mayor's Arrest

Two weeks after the attack on a group of UNP MPs in Hamnbanthota, the Parliamentarians of the main opposition party today staged a protest in front of the Hambanthota Police station demanding the Police to arrest the culprits including Hambanthota Mayor Eraj Fernando who chased after UNP MPs carrying a pistol.

The protest was led by Acting Leader of the party and the Chairman of the UNP Leadership Council Karu Jayasuriya. A large number of UNP Parliamentarians took part in the protest along with their party supporters.

The highlight of the event was the participation of UNP Hambanthota District MP Sajith Premadasa who skipped the fact finding visit on April 17 saying he had a "family engagement".

However, Police have so far failed to arrest the Hambanthota mayor whose pictures were widely carried in media illustrating his unruly behaviour.

Speaking to a weekend English newspaper last week, Hambanthota Mayor Eraj Fernando said he had left Hambanthota to evade Police inquiries into the matter. Although the Police have stated that they would conduct an inquiry into Police officer who failed to control the situation, it is tight-lipped on the impunity enjoyed by the Mayor of Hambanthota.
