Legal Career Barred For Those Above 30 - Council Violates Right To Education

Sri Lanka Law College is to bar law graduates above 30 from sitting for Law College exams - disallowing them from pursuing their careers as lawyers.

It is compulsory for Law graduates in Sri Lanka to sit for Law College exams to qualify themselves to practice as lawyers in the judicial system of the country. The new law, in other words, will bar those above 30 from starting their career as lawyers. Presently, there is no age limit to enter the profession as lawyers.

The Council of Legal Education, which overlooks the legal education in Sri Lanka, has proposed this law and a special meeting in this regard has already been held with the participation of Chief Justice Mohan Peiris.

When contacted by 'Asian Mirror' a top rung official of the Sri Lanka Law College said no final decision has been made on the matter and therefore the media "has no reason to panic".

However, Right to Education is a fundamental right enjoyed by the citizens of Sri Lanka and it is a serious question whether the new law would amount to a violation of 'Right to Education'.
