Massive Environmental Destruction In Sinharaja Rainforest

Anda Dola, a tributary of Gin Ganga in Sinharaja Rainforest Complex is to be dried up due to construction of a mini-hydro project.

Water is to be diverted in a 6.5km stretch of Anda Dola, within Dellawa Rainforest which which is an ecological part of Sinharaja Rainforest, in Neluwa Divisional Secretariat in the district of Galle.

A 2.5km concrete channel has already been constructed within the rainforest and a massive trench had been dug through the hill, which has unstabilized the soil mass.

Many mature endemic and endangered tress have been cut down during the construction within the protected forest reserve. Several species of endemic and endangered species of fish are in verge of local extinction.

The Anda Dola Mini-Hydro Power project is expected to generate a mere 0.77MW energy, the Rainforest Protectors of Sri Lanka said.
