Wigneswaran Hits Out At Government

Northern Province Chief Minister C. V. Wigneswaran said that central government has not taken appropriate measures to solve the problems of people in Northern Province.

Wigneswaran said that lack of political solutions for problems of people and limited powers of Provincial Council has become a serious issue.

The Minister made this observation yesterday at a meeting with a group of South African and Swiss professors to raise awareness regarding distribution of power. The meeting was held at Jaffna Library.

Members of Northern Provincial Council and Tamil National Alliance participated in the event, including Northern Provincial Council Chairman C. V. K. Sivagnanam.

Sri Lankan constitution has given little attention to provincial councils, Wigneswaran said. Programmes of resettlement were slowed down because of inadequate administrative power for the provincial council. Therefore, injustice has been done to these people, he said.

Northern Province Provincial Council Member M. K. Sivajilingam said that Swiss and South African professors conducted lectures on distribution of power, provincial council functionality and democratic system.

Northern Province Provincial Council organized the conference in association with a non-governmental organization, he added.
