The BBS backed protest which was scheduled to take place in Mawanella this evening has been called off following a court order obtained by Mawanella Police.

The organizer of the protest was "Maithree Handa" - a proxy organization of the BBS. 

Mawanella Police has obtained the court order on the grounds that the rally could lead to a tense situation in the Mawanella area. Following the court order, the organizers have officially informed the residents of the area that they would not proceed with the plan. 

The rally was scheduled to start at 4 p.m in Mawanella where there is a sizable proportion of Muslim population. In the recent past, there have been a number of reports of minor clashes between the Sinhales and Muslim groups in Mawanella.

However, a heavy police presence is still seen in and around Mawanella.
