Muslims all over the country today launched a 'Hartal' in protest of clashes that occurred in Aluthgama, Beruwala and Dharga Town.
Over 90 percent of Muslim shops were closed this morning in Trincomalee, Nilaveli, Kuchchaveli, Pulmudai and several other areas in the Eastern province.
In the Kandy town too, a large number of Muslim shops were closed.
The same trend was seen in several areas in the capital city of Colombo such as Maradana, Armour Street, Grandpass and Maligawatte.
A significant police presence was seen some areas in Colombo this morning to avoid any disturbance.
Although a large number of Muslim shops were closed in the district of Vavuniya, the shops belonging to Tamils were open and functioning as usual.
Speaking to Asian Mirror, a representative of the Muslim Traders Association in Vavuniya said the government should take immediate action to arrest those who were involved in what he termed as 'violence against Muslims'.
