Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe has refused to accept the letter of resignation given by UNP MP Palitha Thewarapperuma.
Palitha Thewarapperuma tendered his letter of resignation to the party leader in protest of the inaction on the part of the Police over the Aluthgama incident. He called for immediate resignation of Police Chief N.K. Illangakoon over violent clashes that took place in Aluthgama, Beruwala and Dharga Town three weeks ago.
While refusing to accept Thewarapperuma's resignation letter, the Opposition Leader has said that Thewarapperuma's decision does not reflect the opinion of the people who voted for him.
Wickremesinghe has also stated that Thewarapperuma should get the consent of the people of Kalutara before handing over his letter of resignation. Asian Mirror reliably learns that Thewarapperuma is now in the process of organizing a public meeting to get the people's opinion on his decision. He has already invited several UNP Parliamentarians to take part in the meeting.
UNP sources told Asian Mirror that the Opposition Leader had requested Thewarapperuma to refrain from giving media statements over the matter.
In his letter of resignation Thewarapperuma has stated that his decision would setup an example for other politicians to stay true to their words and live up to the expectations of the people.
