Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa Jayaram has sent a letter to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, demanding the Prime Minister to intervene and secure the 43 Indian fisherman and 55 boats apprehended by the Sri Lankan navy.
In this letter the Chief Minister has stated that the time has come to take a proper solution for this situation and that the Prime Minster should demand the fishermen’s release from the Sri Lankan government.
Speaking to Indian media Jayaram said that “the instances of apprehension of our fishermen continue unabated and are creating a sense of fear, anxiety and unrest among the fishermen community in Tamil Nadu.”
Yesterday Sri Lankan navy apprehended 38 Indian fishermen along with nine boats while they were poaching in Sri Lankan waters.
Jayalalithaa Jayaram made a statement regarding this by saying that “This deliberate strategy of the Sri Lankan Government to destroy the primary means of livelihood of our fishermen is condemnable”.
Despite her accusations Jayalalithaa Jayaram yesterday strongly opposed the idea of marking the naval boundaries in the Palk Straits using buoys.
