A breakaway group within the Sri Lanka Freedom Party is now in the making aiming to “rescue” the ruling party from its present leader, Sunday Lankadeepa newspaper reported today.
According to the report, a large number of senior members of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party, who are disillusioned with the present administration, have extended their support to this campaign.

It is said that ruling party members who are supportive of this campaign are affiliated with former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga. They are of the view that the “old guard” of the SLFP is being sidelined with the arrival of new-comers and those who recently crossed over to the ruling party.
When contacted by Asian Mirror, a senior ruling party Parliamentarian said it was important to strengthen traditional SLFPers who were instrumental in forming the present government.
However, it is still obscure whether this new campaign would come out as an active political movement ahead of the next Parliamentary and Presidential election.
Meanwhile, it was also reported in media that the Presidential Secretariat had received a name-list of ruling party Parliamentarians who had connections with former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga.
