Defence Secreatary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa has told that he will not enter Politics without a request from his brother, President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
Sri Lankan Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, in an interview with a television station, said that he has no interest in entering politics unless President Mahinda Rajapaksa requests him to do so.
He added that he would continue with his duties as the Secretary of Defence to “ensure the well-being of the country.”
When asked about his electorate, the Defence Secretary said first he needed the consent of the President to enter politics.
A few months ago, it was in the grapevine that the Defence Secretary would enter politics from the ruling party. In an interview with a weekend Sinhala newspaper, the Defence Secretary added that he would enter politics at the discretion of President Rajapaksa. He also added that he preferred to enter politics from Colombo rather than contesting from the Hambanthota district, the stronghold of the Rajapaksa family.
However, in a breakfast meeting with newspaper editors last week, President Rajapaksa has he has not requested Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa to enter politics.
