National STD/AIDS Control Programme Sri Lanka has requested the Ministry of Education to introduce Sex Education to the ‘Science and Technology’ curriculum starting from grade 10.
National STD/AIDS Control programme Director Dr. Sisira Liyanage told media that they are currently holding discussions with the Ministry of Education to merge Sex Education with the ‘Science and Technology’ curriculum and to that they are taking steps to introduce the new system as soon as possible.
The Director told that the current curriculum does not provide the sufficient information relevant to sexually transmitted diseases and insight into unplanned pregnancy.
Furthermore, he added that sex education is more important to students above the age of 15 and that this is the most appropriate age for young teenagers to get the essential knowledge.
Sources told Asian Mirror that the Education Minister Bandula Gunawardena and Minister of Health Maithripala Sirisena have taken up discussions regarding this matter.
The programme also reported that the Sri Lankan students are in need of proper sex education and through through proper sex education instances such as underage pregnancy and STD can be avoided.
