Former India Union Cabinet Minister and Chairman of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Committee for Strategic Action Subramanian Swamy said that India has no disputes with Sri Lanka.
“India has no disputes with Sri Lanka and is committed to improving relations with the neighbouring island nation,” Swamy said.
The former Indian Cabinet Member has made these remarks with relevance to the uproar which arose in the Tamil Nadu region regarding the Kachchatheevu incident and the article which appeared on the Sri Lanka Defence website.
Addressing a seminar on defence organized by the Sri Lanka’s Defence Ministry, he said India’s foreign policy, under the Narendra Modi-led government, would be structured entirely on national interests and not on narrow regional interest.
Meanwhile he called for the Tamil people to vote for those who would address their issues. He stated that he could understand the mindset of Tamil political leadership in Sri Lanka. Nevertheless he asked why they had supported former Army Commander Sarath Fonseka in the 2010 Presidential Election while accusing the military of war crimes.
“Much of the troubles are due to the political polemics of Tamil Nadu,” he said, adding that all proponents of strong action in the Tamil cause were defeated electorally.
In an earlier instance the Tamil Nadu Ministers raised questions over Swamy’s visit to Sri Lanka and objected his appearance in the Sri Lanka Defence Summit.
