Opposition's Internal Power Struggle Intensifies With Kumara Welgama Pursuing Presidential Aspirations

Plans are afoot by some sections in the oppsition camp to position Kumara Welgama as a common presidential candidate for the opposition at the next Presidential election.

Asian Mirror reliably learns that a group of SLFP members, including former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga, have endorsed this plan.

A former stalwart of the SLFP and the SLPP, Welgama joined the opposition forces against the presidential candidacy of Gotabhaya Rajapaksa in 2019.

He is also the leader of the New Sri Lanka Freedom Party, a breakaway faction of the SLPP.

As a result, the opposition is now grappling with an intense internal power struggle at least four members trying to secure presidential candidacy at the next election.

Among them are Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa, MPs Patali Champika Ranawaka and Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka.
