The fuel price hike, which was announced yestedray, has take a facrical turn with the SLPP demanding the subject minister — Udaya Prabhath Gammanpila — to step down from the position over the unprecedented price hike.

Issuing a statement, SLPP General Secretary Sagara Kariyawasam blamed the subject minister for allowing such a price hike while the public is grappling with serious hardships in the midst of a pandemic.

Kariyawasam also added that it should be investigated whether the price hike was planned deliberately to inconvenience the government.

However, it is common knowledge that a fuel price hike should be authorised by the Finance Minister and the Cabinet Sub Committee on Cost of Living before coming into effect.

Finance Minister is none other than Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa who also happens to be the Leader of the SLPP.
