Former Chief Minister of Uva Province and UPFA Chief Ministerial candidate Shashindra Rajapaksa said that election violence in Moneragala is an illusion created by uninformed individuals.
In an interview with a vernacular newspaper Shashindra Rajapaksa said that certain parties who want to degrade the performance of the SLFP are spreading rumours about election violence in the Moneragala district. The former Chief Minister of Uva pointed out that incidents of small scale violence are unavoidable prior to an election, but it is ‘purely unnecessary to magnify and publicize these small incidents’.

“Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna recently made a big scene out of an incident where a group of JVP supporters were chased away by the police while they were pasting posters on a public wall. What the JVP and the media who reported this failed to recognize was that pasting posters on a public wall itself is a violation of election law and that the Elections Commissioner has all the rights to enforce law”, he said.
The former Chief Minister lashed out at the JVP saying that they have publicly accused the government for such incidents.
When asked whether the Chief Ministerial Candidate for the UNP Harin Fernando poses a threat to him in the upcoming polls, Shashindra Rajapaksa amusedly remarked that ‘Harin Fernando is no competition for him and that ultimately Fernando will lose his seat in the Parliament and Chief Minister's position'.
