Police nab Chain snatcher through selfie snapped during theft

The Police have nabbed a thief who threatened a woman with a knife and snatched her gold chain through a selfie the woman had snapped during the incident. Due to the evidence provided by the victim the Homagama Police had nabbed the suspect within two hours of the crime.

The incident had taken place when the woman was walking along a road in the Kahathuduwa area. The suspect had arrived on a motorcycle and threatened the woman with a Rambo knife. During the scuffle, the victim had managed to snap a selfie using her mobile phone.

The image had then been sent to officers on patrol by the OIC of the Homagama Police. The suspect was arrested in the Pitipana area within two hours.

The Police had recovered 10.5 g of heroin and a pawning receipt for the chain, issued by a state bank in Godagama. The suspect had pawned the chain for Rs. 90 000 in order to purchase drugs. The thief has been identified as 24-year-old Madushan, a resident of Kiriwattuduwa. According to the Police, the suspect was recently released from prison after being incarcerated for drug-related charges.
