Saddharathana Thero of Rajanganaya, a controversial Buddhist monk known for making statements that have the potential to disrupt religious harmony, was apprehended by the CID.

The arrest, conducted by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on the night of May 28 in Anuradhapura, comes in response to multiple complaints regarding the monk's provocative social media posts, which suggested the likelihood of interethnic tensions.

The CID, after examining the complaints filed against Saddharathana Thero, deemed it necessary to arrest the monk in order to prevent any potential unrest between different racial and religious communities.
