Mahavamsa Included in UNESCO's World Heritage List, Peradeniya University Recognized for Oldest and Most Complete Collection

Peradeniya University Librarian Dr. R. Maheswaran announced that the Mahavamsa has been officially included in UNESCO's World Heritage List, as published on their official website on the 24th.

The recently published World Documentary Heritage List by UNESCO features a total of 64 items, bringing the overall count to 494.

Dr. Maheswaran highlighted that copies of the Mahavamsa can be found in various locations across the island. In response, the government established a committee tasked with surveying these copies and preparing a comprehensive report. The committee's findings confirmed that Peradeniya University possesses the oldest and most complete collection of the Mahavamsa.

As a testament to this recognition, a UNESCO representative is scheduled to visit the University of Peradeniya in the coming days. During the visit, they will present a written declaration affirming the ancient Mahavamsa book's status as a world heritage. This valuable artifact has been meticulously preserved within the premises of the Peradeniya University Library.
