“Flour Companies are Collecting Funds for Presidential Election”: Anura Kumara Slams Companies for Not Giving Benefits to the Poor

Speaking in Parliament, NPP Leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake raised concerns about the rising price of bread flour. Dissanayake claimed that companies, including Prima, had increased the price of flour to generate funds for the upcoming presidential election.

Under the Standing Order 27(2), Dissanayake posed a question regarding the sudden surge in flour prices. He asserted that flour companies traditionally sought to raise funds for every presidential election.

Dissanayake highlighted several factors that, in his view, should have led to a decrease in flour prices. He pointed out that global wheat flour and wheat grain supplies were diminishing, while the value of the dollar was declining. Despite these circumstances, flour companies were not passing on the advantages to consumers. According to Dissanayake, this pattern indicated that the companies were exploiting other avenues to increase their profits, especially during the presidential election period.

The MP implicated Prima as one of the companies involved in this alleged practice. He suggested that due to the need for fundraising ahead of the upcoming presidential election, consumers were burdened with higher flour prices. Dissanayake acknowledged the difficulty of expecting a response from the Prime Minister and the Leader of the House on this matter.
