Over 4,500 Motorists Fined Under Police CCTV System in Colombo

Over 4,500 motorists have been fined for traffic violations identified through a CCTV system in Colombo. DIG Thushara Gamlath of the Police CCTV Division stated that CCTV footage has been handed over to relevant police stations to impose the fines.

The highest number of violations occurred at the Borella Junction, with three-wheeler and bus drivers being the most frequent offenders.

This enforcement follows the installation of 106 CCTV cameras at 33 key locations in the Western Province, including Borella and Narahenpita, as part of an initiative launched by Sri Lanka Police in February this year. The cameras monitor infractions such as lane violations, disobeying traffic signals, parking in prohibited areas, and running red lights.

DIG Gamlath said that the CCTV initiative has significantly reduced traffic violations in the monitored areas.
