Drunken Train Driver Suspended: SL Railways Launches Inquiry

Sri Lanka Railways has initiated a departmental inquiry into the misconduct of a train driver who operated the Colombo to Kandy service on June 30. The driver, who has since been suspended, was reportedly heavily intoxicated and exhibited unruly behavior shortly after the train departed Colombo at 10:45 am.

Witnesses reported that the driver stopped the train near Sudhumpola and attempted to leave, but passengers intervened and brought him back. The assistant driver then took over and operated the train to Kandy Station. Due to the incident, the train, which was scheduled to arrive at 1:40 pm, reached its destination at 2:30 pm.

The intoxicated driver has been handed over to the Railway Security Division by the Railway Transport Inspector. The investigation is ongoing.
