Japan Welcomes Sri Lanka's Debt Restructuring Agreement

 

Japan has officially welcomed the final agreement reached between the Official Creditor Committee (OCC) and Sri Lanka on the memorandum of understanding (MOU) concerning debt restructuring. This development marks a significant step in addressing Sri Lanka's debt issues under the Ranil Wickremesinghe Government.

Japanese Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa commended the efforts of the Sri Lankan government during a bilateral meeting and working dinner with Sri Lankan Foreign Affairs Minister Ali Sabry in Tokyo. Minister Kamikawa highlighted the importance of signing the MOU on debt restructuring  and expressed hope for transparent and comparable implementation of debt restructuring with other creditor nations and private creditors.

And also minister Kamikawa highlighted Japan's readiness to resume yen loans for existing projects once the MOU is signed and Sri Lanka confirms its intention to swiftly conclude a bilateral agreement. In response, Minister Sabry provided updates on the MOU signing process and the future outlook for debt restructuring, assuring that necessary measures will be taken to resume yen loans as soon as possible.
