On Thursday, a gas leak at an aircraft engineering facility at Malaysia’s Kuala Lumpur International Airport left 39 people ill. The Selangor state fire department reported that the incident occurred at the Southern Support Zone Sepang Aircraft Engineering facility, separate from the passenger terminal, ensuring no passengers were affected and flights continued without disruption.

The fire department received an emergency call at 11:23 a.m. local time and dispatched personnel and a hazardous materials team to the site. The affected individuals, employees of three companies operating in the facility, experienced symptoms of dizziness and nausea. Fourteen were treated at the air disaster unit, and one person was hospitalized.

The chemical was identified as methyl mercaptan, used as an odorant in liquefied petroleum gas, leaking from an unused tank. The fire department confirmed the leak was being sealed, and plans were in place to dismantle and dispose of the tank. Public safety was not at risk.
