The National Aquatic Resources Research and Development Agency (NARA) has raised alarms over the threat posed by bottom trawling by Indian fishermen to the marine resources in the Sea of Sri Lanka.

NARA Director Ganapathypillai Arulanandan reported significant damage to marine ecosystems, particularly in the North Sea, due to this destructive fishing method. He noted a 50% decline in fish harvest since 2015, attributing it to the destruction of coral reefs and seaweed beds, which are essential breeding grounds for fish.

Arulanandan highlighted the challenges faced by Sri Lankan authorities in controlling illegal bottom trawling activities and called for stricter enforcement measures and international cooperation to safeguard the marine resources in the Sea of Sri Lanka.
