No More Pay Raises For Government Employees in 2024, Says President

President Ranil Wickremesinghe said that government sector employees in Sri Lanka will not receive salary increases this year. The decision comes as the country prepares for Presidential and General elections.

President Wickremesinghe cited economic strain and the depletion of excess funds due to previous programs, including a Rs. 10,000 salary increase and additional benefits under the "Aswasuma" program. He said the importance of fiscal responsibility, warning that unplanned salary increases could destabilize the government.

A committee will be formed to review salary adjustments, with their recommendations to be included in the 2025 budget. The President highlighted the need to prioritize national stability and prepare for the upcoming elections, asserting that his administration's approach will ultimately benefit the people.
