Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa said the importance of learning Hindi and Chinese alongside English to better engage with global labor markets. At an event in Udunuwara, Premadasa proposed the creation of 24 open community universities across Sri Lanka's districts to enhance access to higher education and develop a knowledge-driven economy.
Premadasa explained that these universities would promote lifelong learning and support both urban and rural development through flexible degree programs and community engagement. He stated that a Samagi Jana Balawegaya government would launch this initiative through public-private partnerships.
During the event, Premadasa donated Rs. 1,177,000 worth of classroom equipment and sound systems to Udunuwara Davulgala Veligalla Udaaludenia Maha Vidyalaya and contributed Rs. 100,000 to the school's development fund. He highlighted the importance of promoting English language education as a cornerstone of genuine patriotism and national interest.
Premadasa also highlighted the "Husma" program, which has donated Rs. 190 million worth of medicines and hospital equipment to 63 hospitals, and the "Sakwala" bus program, which has provided 89 buses worth Rs. 432 million to 89 schools. Additionally, Rs. 389 million has been allocated for classroom equipment for 351 schools under the "Sakwala ICT program."
