The Cabinet of Ministers has approved the publication of the revised Online Safety Bill in the government gazette, with plans to table it in Parliament soon. This decision follows the Supreme Court's directives on the original draft, leading to the enactment of the Security of Online Methods Act No. 9 of 2024.
Experts had raised concerns about specific sections of the bill prior to its passage in Parliament. However, amendments could not be incorporated at the committee stage. Consequently, on February 12, 2024, the Cabinet approved the preparation of a draft bill to amend the existing act.
The draft bill, prepared by the Legal Draftsman and cleared by the Attorney General, has now received Cabinet approval. The revised bill will be published in the government gazette before being presented to Parliament for further consideration.
