Supreme Court Issues Interim Order Barring Deshabandu from IGP Post

The Supreme Court has issued an interim order preventing Deshabandu Tennakoon from performing the duties of Inspector General of Police. This action follows a petition filed by eight individuals, including the Archbishop of Colombo, His Eminence Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith.

The case was heard by a Supreme Court bench comprising Justices Yasantha Kodagoda, Achala Wengappuli, and Mahinda Samayawardhena. The petitioners contend that Tennakoon's appointment, recommended by the President, violates fundamental rights guaranteed by the Constitution.

Respondents named in the case include the Constitutional Council, Speaker, Deshabandu Tennakoon, the Attorney General, and other relevant parties.
