Sri Lanka Targets T20 World Cup After Asia Cup Success 

 

Sri Lanka's Women's cricket team, under the leadership of Chamari Athapaththu, is setting its sights on the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup after their recent victory in the Women's Asia Cup. Athapaththu played a pivotal role, scoring a crucial half-century to help Sri Lanka chase down India’s total of 165/6 with eight balls to spare, Winning their first Women’s Asia Cup title.

This victory caps an impressive 14-month period for Sri Lanka, marked by T20I series wins over Bangladesh, England, and South Africa, as well as triumphing in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Qualifier.

Athapaththu, who won the Player of the Tournament award, expressed pride in her team's achievements and optimism for the future. "We sacrificed a lot for the last 10-15 years. Finally, we won this award, this trophy," she said.

Key contributions from players like Harshitha Samarawickrama, Kavisha Dilhari, and Udeshika Prabodhani have bolstered the team's performance. Samarawickrama scored a significant half-century alongside Athapaththu in the final, while Dilhari and Prabodhani were among the tournament's top wicket-takers.

Looking ahead, Athapaththu hopes to continue playing at least until the next ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup in India, hoping to be part of two more major tournaments before considering retirement.
