A group of Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) Ministers and Members of Parliament have voiced their support for President Ranil Wickremesinghe, despite the party's politburo decision to field their own candidate in the forthcoming Presidential election.
State Minister Pramitha Bandara Tennakoon took to X (formerly Twitter) to reaffirm his allegiance to President Wickremesinghe. "Immaterial of the decision made by the political bureau of SLPP, together with the majority of parliamentary members, I will continue to support President Ranil Wickremesinghe in the upcoming presidential election, who rescued the country at the most crucial time," Tennakoon said.
Echoing Tennakoon's sentiments, State Minister of Finance Shehan Semasinghe also expressed his support on X, highlighting President Wickremesinghe's leadership in guiding Sri Lanka through severe crises towards stability and growth.
A group of Ministers, including those who opposed the SLPP politburo's proposal, met with President Wickremesinghe to solidify their support for his candidacy. The meeting took place at the political office of United National Party MP Vajira Abeywardena in Colombo. Key participants included Deputy Speaker Ajith Rajapakse, Minister Kanchana Wijesekera, State Ministers Dilum Amunugama, Anupa Pasqual, Geeta Kumarasinghe, and MPs Mahindananda Aluthgamage, S.B. Dissanayake, and Premnath C. Dolawatte.
