Ismail Haniyeh, the chief of Hamas, was killed in Iran on Wednesday, according to statements from the Palestinian militant group Hamas and Iran’s elite Revolutionary Guards.
Hamas mourned Haniyeh’s death, attributing it to “a treacherous Zionist raid on his residence in Tehran.” Haniyeh had been in Iran to attend the swearing-in ceremony of Iran's new president on Tuesday.
The Revolutionary Guards confirmed the incident, stating, “Early this morning, the residence of Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran was struck, resulting in his and one of his bodyguards’ martyrdom. The cause is under investigation and will be announced soon.”
