Dr. Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe, the presidential candidate of the National Democratic Front, has introduced a proposal for the 22nd Constitutional Amendment to Parliament.
The amendment aims to implement key changes, including reinforcing Article 91 to prevent former Presidents from becoming Members of Parliament and altering Article 36 to ban retired Presidents from public service roles.
A major proposal includes the abolition of successive presidential elections. Under the new framework, the Prime Minister would assume the role of acting President in case of a vacancy, with the Election Commission tasked to conduct a presidential election within three months.
