India Provides Initial Funding for Hybrid Power Projects in Jaffna Islands

The Indian High Commission in Colombo officially handed over the first payment for hybrid power projects in three islands off Jaffna—Delft, Nainativu, and Analaitivu. Indian High Commissioner Santosh Jha presented the funding to Dr. Sulakshana Jayawardena, Secretary of the Ministry of Power and Energy, and Mr. Ranjith Sepala, Chairman of the Sri Lanka Sustainable Energy Authority (SLSEA).

The project, funded by a USD 11 million grant from India, aims to address the energy needs of these off-grid islands using a combination of solar and wind power. The initiative follows a Memorandum of Understanding signed in March 2022 and a contract with U Solar Clean Energy Solutions Pvt. Ltd. in March 2024. Initial work has begun, with completion and handover scheduled for early April 2025.
