MP Wimal Weerawansa has accused President Ranil Wickremesinghe of engaging in a political conspiracy to secure his hold on power, potentially leading to violence similar to the May 9, 2022, unrest. Speaking at a media briefing, Weerawansa claimed that the United States and its ambassador in Sri Lanka are involved in attempts to align Ranil Wickremesinghe with Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa, though Premadasa reportedly resisted these efforts.
Weerawansa expressed concerns over recent defections from the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB), including the departure of MP Thalatha Athukorala. He suggested that such defections could weaken Premadasa and benefit a third party allegedly colluding to incite violence before the election. This scenario, Weerawansa warned, could enable Ranil Wickremesinghe to remain in office under constitutional provisions until a new president is elected.
