The Maligakanda Magistrate's Court has been informed by President's Counsel Anuj Premaratne that former Health Minister Keheliya Rambukwella is at serious risk of severe disability due to inadequate medical treatment. This revelation came during a hearing related to the distribution of substandard antibody vaccines in Sri Lankan hospitals. Premaratne argued for Rambukwella's bail, citing the potential futility of bail if his condition worsens.
Deputy Solicitor General Lakmini Girihagama suggested that Rambukwella’s bail could be reconsidered pending a review by a board of medical experts. The magistrate has ordered an urgent examination of Rambukwella by a medical panel.
The court directed prison officials to send Sudath Janaka Fernando, the pharmaceutical company owner and first suspect in the case, to the Angoda National Institute of Mental Health following evidence of his severe mental distress.
