Sri Lankan Navy and coast guard have intercepted three Indian trawlers poaching in their waters, arresting 14 Indian fishermen during an operation off Delft Island on September 7. The Sri Lankan Navy and Coast Guard, conducting routine patrols to address illegal fishing, engaged Fast Attack Crafts to drive away several Indian trawlers found fishing illegally.
The seized trawlers and fishermen were transported to Kankesanthurai harbor and will be handed over to the Mailadi Fisheries Inspector for legal action.
This incident adds to the Navy’s efforts in 2024, bringing the total to 50 Indian trawlers and 359 fishermen intercepted and processed for illegal fishing.
