September 09, 2024

On September 9, 2024, thousands of Indian diaspora took to the streets in over 130 cities across 25 countries to demand justice following the rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata. The protests, which began in Japan, Australia, Taiwan, and Singapore, quickly spread to Europe and the U.S.

The victim, a 31-year-old postgraduate student, was attacked after a grueling 36-hour shift at R.G. Kar Medical College. She was discovered in a seminar room with severe injuries. Authorities have arrested a suspect and the former principal of the college.

Protesters, including those in San Francisco Bay Area and Dublin, California, called for accountability and safety for women. In Stockholm, demonstrators sang Bengali songs and held signs. Activists highlighted ongoing issues of sexual violence despite previous legal reforms. India’s federal police are investigating, and the Supreme Court has established a task force to improve hospital safety.
