New Plan to Pass Rupee Gains to Consumers

The Ministry of Trade has initiated a new plan aimed at transferring the benefits of the strengthening rupee against the US dollar directly to consumers. Secretary M.M. Naimudeen announced the plan following directives from Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya during a discussion yesterday.

Key components of the initiative include a thorough review of market prices to establish appropriate price ranges and a communication strategy targeting food importers and producers, urging them to lower prices with detailed justifications.

Naimudeen emphasized that the advantages of the rupee's appreciation have not been adequately felt by the public. The Ministry will announce specific reductions in food and other product prices within the next two weeks.
