Former Senior DIG Nilantha Jayawardena, head of the State Intelligence Service (SIS), is currently appearing before the Supreme Court regarding Fundamental Rights petitions filed against him for his inaction prior to the Easter Sunday attacks. Despite receiving credible intelligence, DIG Jayawardena is accused of failing to prevent the tragedy, which claimed numerous lives.
The Supreme Court previously ordered Jayawardena to pay Rs. 75 million in compensation to the victims, alongside other officials. Former President Maithripala Sirisena was ordered to pay Rs. 100 million, while former IGP Pujith Jayasundara has already fulfilled his compensation obligation.
On September 27, the Attorney General plans to file contempt charges against Jayawardena for non-payment. Today’s court appearance follows an initial deadline of July 12, 2023, for compensation payments.
Among the petitioners is Nandana Sirimanna, who lost two children in the attacks, alongside other affected people, including tourism entrepreneur Janath Vidanage and several clergy members.
