Bribery Commission Director General Resigns

The Director General of the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC), Kanishka Wijeratne, has undertaken to resign from his position by 3 p.m. yesterday. This decision follows the Supreme Court's approval of three Fundamental Rights applications challenging his appointment.

The petitions, including one from Transparency International Sri Lanka (TISL), argued that Wijeratne's reappointment violates the Anti-Corruption Act and lacks procedural integrity. The Supreme Court's three-judge bench granted leave to proceed with the petitions under Article 12(1) of the Constitution.

In court, Wijeratne's counsel indicated that he intends to return to judicial service, prompting the petitioners to refrain from seeking interim relief on the condition of his resignation. Kanishka Wijeratne had been serving as DG since January 2020 and was reappointed on April 2, 2024, following the enactment of a new Anti-Corruption Act. TISL is seeking the nullification of his appointment, citing concerns over his compliance with statutory requirements.
