The Civil Collective, comprising over 40 civil society organizations, has issued a stark warning that major political parties in Sri Lanka face potential elimination in the upcoming General Election if they fail to field ideal candidates. During a launch event in Colombo, the group introduced a 10-point criterion for assessing candidates, emphasizing the public's resolve to reject corruption.
Rohana Hettiarachchi, Executive Director of the March 12 Movement and PAFFREL, said that voters are now more aware and will prioritize candidates with clean records. He cautioned that parties that overlook this demand could become obsolete.
Dr. Paikiasothy Saravanamuttu from the Centre for Policy Alternatives highlighted the need for policymakers free from corruption to effect real change in the political landscape.
The 10 criteria include qualifications, health status, allegations of corruption, and community engagement. Leading organizations in the Civil Collective include the Colombo YMBA, National Peace Council, and the Sarvodaya Shramadana Movement, among others.
