Heavy Rains Affect Over 160,000 People

The Department of Meteorology has reported a decrease in rainfall for today, although intermittent showers are still expected in some areas.

As of this morning, the number of individuals affected by the heavy rains has risen to 160,093, with 9,591 people currently sheltering in 70 safe locations, according to the Disaster Management Centre. Tragically, three lives have been lost due to the adverse weather conditions.

In positive news, the Provincial Director of Education has confirmed that schools in Colombo, Gampaha, and Kelaniya zones that are not designated as safety centers will reopen today. Additionally, the Department of Irrigation reports that the flood threat from the Kelani, Kalu, Nilwala, Gin, and Attanagalu Oya rivers is receding.

Landslide warnings remain in effect for several divisional secretariats across seven districts, including Colombo and Galle, until this afternoon.
