Police seized two luxury vehicles valued at over 60 million rupees from a residence in the Aruppola area of Kandy due to unpaid taxes. Acting on a tip-off, the Kandy District Crime Investigation Division confiscated a luxury BMW and a Mitsubishi jeep yesterday evening after the owner failed to present valid registration documents.
The vehicles have stirred controversy, particularly regarding their ownership. Former Minister Rohitha Abeygunawardena's political party has distanced itself from the vehicles, asserting that they were not used by him. In response, a relative of Rohitha Abeygunawardena filed a complaint with the Bambalapitiya police, alleging a smear campaign against his family.
At a press conference,he denied any wrongdoing, saying, "I have never engaged in politics to commit fraud or theft. If there is any truth to these allegations, I will resign from my candidacy in the upcoming election and retire from politics."
