IGP Assures Foreigners' Safety as Security Forces Acted on Prior Warning on Arugam Bay

Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP) Priyantha Weerasooriya assured that the security of all foreigners in the country is guaranteed and that diplomatic missions have been informed accordingly.

He made these remarks during a special press conference at the Polonnaruwa SSP’s Office, addressing the security measures implemented in response to warnings about a potential attack targeting popular tourist locations in the Arugam Bay.

Meanwhile, security forces were aware of warnings about a potential attack targeting popular tourist spots in the Arugam Bay, Police Spokesperson DIG Nihal Thalduwa said.

In response, security measures in the region were strengthened several days ago, with around 500 police officers and Special Task Force (STF) personnel deployed to enhance safety in the Arugam Bay tourist zone.

DIG Thalduwa confirmed that intelligence agencies and other security forces are focused on tightening security in the area. He clarified that no intelligence reports have indicated threats in Colombo or other parts of the country, urging the public to remain calm and avoid unnecessary fear.

Special attention is being given to the safety of tourists in Arugam Bay and other provinces. According to Thalduwa, recent intelligence suggested a possible threat to Israelis in the area. As a precaution, the Senior DIG in charge of the province has taken preliminary measures, including deploying roadblocks and conducting periodic checks on vehicles and individuals.

“Special security units, including the Police, STF, Navy, Army, and intelligence officers, have been deployed to ensure safety in the area. If any further information is received, immediate action will be taken,” Thalduwa reassured.
